A super quality and fairly rare antique Scottish silver flower holder brooch from the Victorian silversmiths, Lewis & Alexander. The makers, who registered their designs in 1873 for silver thistle shaped novelties were located at 3, E. Register Street in Edinburgh.

This is a particularly good example of their sought after thistle wares. Bearing the British registry kite mark and hallmarked for Edinburgh 1885 the brooch is beautifully crafted with life like detailing. The stem and flower head are finely modelled and the side leaves have veining and sharp spiky edges. The brooch is open at the top and gilded in gold inside. The interior is hollow to accommodate a living flower stem and water to keep it fresh.

A sturdy tension pin stem and heavy duty c-clasp completes this wonderful piece. Traditionally worn for formal occasions this is a fine example of a classic Celtic dress lapel brooch or boutonniere. Perfect for wear by either sex, fabulous for the groom at the Scottish themed wedding or when you need to dress to impress and heirloom worthy to boot!

MATERIALS: Sterling silver

SIZE: 2-1/4" long (55mm) 5/8" wide (21mm), weighs 9.2 grams

HALLMARKS: Stamped with castle for Edinburgh, thistle for Scotland, date letter gothic 'd' in round cartouche for 1885 and makers mark 'L&A'. Also stamped with the kite shaped British registry design mark for this brooch which was registered to Lewis & Alexander in June 1891.

CONDITION: Excellent antique condition showing minimal signs of wear, so often the thistles are missing their delicate side leaves but this one is completely intact and pristine. The interior is still brightly gilded in gold and the pin back is in perfect working order.
