An absolutely superb example of Georgian mourning/sentimental jewelry this locket brooch dates to the late 1700's.

Beautifully crafted the brooch features 16 large size black dot French paste stones. The stones "black dot pastes" were created by painting black dots on the foiled backs of the hand cut glass stones to imitate the collate facets of old cut diamonds, a highly skilled art form. Good stones were more valuable than real gemstones during the Georgian era when paste jewelry was the height of fashion and worn to impress.

Highly collectible and desirable it is rare to find the pastes in this incredible intact condition along with the original hair work. The stones are set in a silver fluted mount that is accented with silver beads around the edge.

The central glass locket panel contains dark red hair woven into a tight basket weave pattern. The hair compartment is accented by a framework of rose gold beading.

The brooch has a heavy duty pin back with a tube hinge and 'C' clasp. The pin stem has a curve at the hinge to accommodate a ribbon or chain for wear as a pendant. The brooch is weighty and lies perfectly flat against the chest when worn as a pendant.
