A fairly rare survivor this beautiful all original antique red coral necklace measures 16-3/8" long so it is worn high on the neck (at the collar bone) as was the fashion in Victorian times. The rolled gold fittings are original and the necklace fastens with a bolt ring that is attached to the silk necklace cord with an antique figure of eight finding. The cord is finished with French wire at the ends.
The coral is natural and undyed and a beautiful bright tomato red with a lovely polished shine, the branches graduate from roughly 18mm to 4mm in length. The necklace weighs 19.6 grams, it is in excellent antique condition with no noted flaws and the silk cord shows no signs of deterioration.
An absolute beauty, this antique coral necklace is the perfect wearing length so it will always be visible with any neckline, a great way to connect you to 19th century fashion! Not only were the Victorians fascinated with the natural world, they loved the romance of hidden meanings and this was apparent than in their jewellery choices, they considered coral a symbol of modesty, wisdom, happiness and immortality.
