Dating to mid-Victorian "grand" period, circa 1850, this huge carved bog oak brooch would have suited the voluminous dresses and enormous crinolines of the era.

The brooch is dimensional, incredibly detailed and deeply carved out of very thick 10,000 year old bog oak wood. It features 3 tiers of shamrocks in a circular pattern with the high domed centre tier set with a paste "diamond" star motif pegged into the top. An extremely rare piece especially on this grand scale and wonderful that it is Irish themed, a joy for collectors!

The brooch measures 2-1/4" (56mm) in diameter and stands a full 22mm high, weighs 26 grams. The condition given age is excellent with no noted chips to the carving or cracks in the deep black wood. Incredibly all the paste stones are still present and correct although they have darkened a little with age. Any white flecks in the photo are caused by the macro lens and not visible to the eye.
