A substantial and stately antique Victorian 9ct gold Italian carved lava stone cameo ring.
Neoclassical in style the ring is crafted in heavy gauge yellow gold and set with a mossy olive green lava stone cameo of a classical maiden carved in high relief. The cameo is set into a very deep bezel flanked by split shoulders and a thick flat band completes this impressive ring.
Highly collectible, 18th and 19th century visitors to Pompeii were charmed by these cameos locally carved from the volcanic rock and bought them as souvenirs of their 'Grand Tour'. It is lovely to find one set into a gold ring that would have made quite the statement of culture and refinement in those days and it still continues to do so today!

MEASUREMENTS: ring size UK O, US 7-1/4 (sizing is available for an additional fee). The face of the ring measures 1" (2.5cm) tall by 3/4" (2cm) wide, the shoulders are 11mm wide graduating to a 3mm wide band at the back. The profile of the ring stands 8.8mm high from the finger

WEIGHT: heavy at 6.1 grams
CONDITION: in very, very good condition with light surface wear as expected but no thinning to the gold. There is a hairline on the cameo near to the edge that looks more like a natural imperfection in the rock rather than any real damage and the carving may not be as sharp as it once was but we think this just adds to her antique charm.
