The exterior is beautifully decorated with machine-turned engraving in a herringbone pattern and it bears the monogram "AA" of the original owner on the lid. The edges are embossed in floral ornamentation. It opens from the side to reveal a gold gilded interior and an exquisite pierced grille in a floral & foliate design.

Vinaigrettes were intended to hold tiny sponges dipped in aromatic vinegar so their interiors are gilded in gold to protect the silver from oxidation caused by the acidity of the vinegar. The hinged and decoratively pierced inner grille kept the sponge in place while its perforations allowed the aroma to waft through. A whiff of the vinegar would ward off the notoriously noxious odours of the era or revive someone from a fainting spell. During the Georgian period vinaigrettes were very fashionable and a sign of high status, they were worn around the neck, on a chatelaine suspended from the waist, or carried in a pocket if it had no hanging loop. Pieces with a clearly struck, legible date are increasingly scarce and this superb example offers a firm point of reference within the mid-19th century Russian silver tradition.

The form—two domed circular plates joined by a central clasp—is characteristic of Caucasian belt fittings, likely associated with workshops active in the Tiflis region. The surfaces are richly worked with scrolling foliate engraving, filled with dark niello to create a strong graphic contrast typical of the finest regional production.

At the centre, the clasp is adorned with a flowing serpent motif, its elongated S-shaped form rendered in niello. This stylised zoomorphic design, characteristic of Caucasian metalwork, is both decorative and symbolic, traditionally associated with protection. Positioned at the focal point of the buckle, serpentine motifs are often incorporated into weapon mounts, belt fittings and elements of armour, where they serve as subtle guardianship devices.

The reverse retains multiple Imperial Russian marks, including the 84 zolotnik silver standard (.875) which was the standard Russian silver grade during the Imperial period. Also stamped in a rectangular assay cartouche reading Т.И. over 1872, identifying the assay master and confirming the date. An additional shield-form assay mark and a mark reading ↄx further supports a regional origin. Together, these marks provide a high level of confidence in both period and attribution.

Steeped in history, this is a compelling example of 19th century Russian silver—where practical form meets rich ethnographic design. We have previously handled silver lockets by this maker and the quality is consistently exceptional. The case is fully hallmarked for Chester 1901, a particularly collectible assay office prized by enthusiasts of antique British silver. The historic Chester assay office finally closed its doors in 1962, making surviving Chester silver especially appealing to collectors today.

What truly sets this piece apart is its wonderfully tiny size — the smallest silver vesta we have encountered. Its scale suggests it may originally have been intended for wear on a lady’s chatelaine or long guard chain. Remarkably, the case still retains fifteen miniature wax vesta matches — an exceptionally unusual survival that gives the piece tremendous period charm and authenticity.

The matches themselves are especially interesting. Measuring a diminutive 3cm in length, they are perfectly proportioned to the tiny case. “Wax Vestas” were among the earliest friction matches, patented by William Newton and named after Vesta, the Roman goddess of fire and the hearth. Small protective containers for these matches began appearing in the early nineteenth century to guard against accidental ignition. In Britain these containers became known as “vesta cases”, “vesta boxes” or simply “vestas”.

Beautifully made with a crisp diagonal ribbed design and a striker to the underside, the case has a wonderfully weighty feel for its size and retains a silver suspension ring, allowing it to be worn today as an unusual antique pendant. Named to R.W. Bird and housed in its original fitted presentation case, this impressive piece represents the office of Past Grand Worthy Patriarch within the Order of the Sons of Temperance.

Founded in New York in 1842 and introduced to Britain in 1849, the Sons of Temperance was a fraternal organisation dedicated to promoting total abstinence from alcohol. In addition to its temperance principles, the Order provided members with mutual aid and friendly society benefits during a period when state welfare provisions were virtually non-existent.

The medal is beautifully detailed, displaying the Order's emblem with the mottos "Love", "Purity" and "Fidelity" in colourful enamel. The reverse bears full Birmingham sterling silver hallmarks for 1935 together with the maker's mark "MTC" for Morton T. Colver. Suspended from an engraved silver bar dated "1936", the medal hangs from its original red and navy ribbon, adorned with an all-seeing eye device and topped by a further engraved silver name bar reading "R.W. Bird".

Presented in the original blue leatherette fitted case in which it was discovered, this is a fine and increasingly scarce piece of British fraternal regalia. An excellent addition for collectors of friendly society memorabilia, temperance movement artefacts, sterling silver medals, or historical fraternal orders.

THE DETAILS
METAL: Gold-plated sterling silver with enamel decoration
WEIGHT: 34.9 grams
HALLMARKS: Name bar stamped "STERLING SILVER"; date bar stamped "SILVER"; medal hallmarked with lion passant for sterling silver, anchor for Birmingham Assay Office, date letter "L" for 1935, and maker's mark "MTC" for Morton T. Colver
RECIPIENT: Engraved "R.W. Bird"
DATE: 1936
CONDITION: Excellent original vintage condition. The enamel remains bright and intact, the engraved bars are crisp and clear, and the original ribbon survives with minor age-related fraying to the edges. Areas of age-related tarnish and dark patina remain to the gilt finish, particularly on the reverse. We have chosen to leave the medal untouched, as many collectors prefer original surfaces and patina.
________________________
At Mercy Madge we offer carefully curated quality antique and vintage jewellery sourced in Great Britain.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
* Free worldwide shipping on all purchases.
* Returns - you can return your item for a refund for any reason.
