A lively bold and exotic pair of all original Art Deco niello silver drop earrings hailing from Siam.
Crafted in sterling silver and lovely quality the earrings feature plump tear shaped drops that have both sides hand-engraved in a dancing Siamese goddesses against black niello backgrounds. The drops suspend from round pillowed black niello tops that have screw fasteners to attach to the earlobe.
Statement size these elegant Art Deco earrings are a delight, full of Eastern promise and very collectible too!
Niello is an ancient technique similar to enamelling but instead of glass a black mixture of silver, copper, lead, and sulphur is mixed into a paste and applied to the silver and fired until it melts and sets. Niello work decoration has been used throughout history by many cultures including the Byzantines, Romans, Islamic world, and the Far East.
MATERIALS: sterling silver, niello inlay
DIMENSIONS: 1-3/4" (4.5cm) from top to bottom, the drops are 1-3/8" (3.5mm) long and 5/8" (1.6cm) wide at the base
MARKS: stamped 'SIAM' on the backs, they are not marked for metal content and we have acid tested and verified that they are sterling silver throughout
DATE: Art Deco, 1930s
WEIGHT: 9 grams combined
CONDITION: in very good condition with the niello intact, any spotted areas are reflections, the screw backs in perfect working order
