A fine example of a high quality Victorian rolled gold guard chain necklace and this one benefits from a hallmarked solid gold dog-clip clasp. Rolled gold (gold filled) jewellery is made by mechanically bonding a layer of solid gold over a stronger base metal, usually brass. The gold layer is at least 1/20 of the overall metal content by weight and it is a high quality finish saturated in colour. We did think this necklace was solid gold throughout until we tested the chain part!
At a full 53"/135cm in length the necklace is a classic Belcher chain with sturdy round d-shaped links that are faceted which adds an extra sparkle and the gold is a lovely warm buttery yellow in colour. The necklace terminates in a solid gold dog-clip clasp that is fixed (it doesn't swivel) which is hallmarked '9ct'
Add a locket or a pendant or not this beautiful Victorian necklace has interest whether worn long, doubled. During the Georgian and Victorian eras these practical chains were one of several jewels layered and worn at the same time, they were used to attach, and keep close at hand, all manner of things like pockets watches, lorgnettes and vinaigrettes. Still as stylish and eminently wearable today., this one looks like solid gold throughout but buying it won't break the bank!
DETAILS:
METAL: chain 9ct rolled gold (gold filled), clip solid 9ct gold
MEASUREMENTS: the round links are 3.3mm diameter. Continuously the chain measures 53"/135cm in total length with the necklace measuring 27-1/2"/70cm down each side. The dog-clip is 21mm tall by 7.7mm wide.
WEIGHT: 29.9 grams.
MARKS: dog-clip stamped '9ct' and makers mark 'A.C. Co'
DATE: Victorian, circa 1890
CONDITION: the necklace is in very, very good antique condition with minimal wear to the heavy gold layer, the links are free flowing with no kinks and the clasp in perfect working order. This piece has been professionally cleaned and polished so it is ready to wear or give as a gift.
