A very rare British 'Royal Flying Corps' antique sweetheart pendant locket dating to the First World War era. The Royal Flying Corps (RFC) was the predecessor to the Royal Air Force (RAF) and it only existed between the years of 1912 and 1918. Jewellery that bears the RFC insignia is virtually non-existent and when it can be found, it is confined to small sweetheart brooches.
This is quite a large and imposing piece, the locket housing is gilt (gold plated silver) and it has a RFC regimental badge on the front. The badge is decorated in a bright yellow metal crown and laurel sprays with 'RFC' in white metal.
The back of the locket has a hinged cover that opens to access a photo compartment in one side, it currently has a photo of a young gent inside along with a picture frame and glass. The other side has a removable cover behind the badge.
The badge is stamped 'Gaunt London'. JR Gaunt of London were prolific makers of regalia in the 19th and early 20th century, it is possible this pendant was a specially commissioned piece because the company did not normally manufacture jewellery.

CONDITION: This rare antique air force sweetheart locket is excellent quality and it remains in very, very good condition. The badge is bright and vibrant with minimal wear, the inside and back of the locket show a little more signs of age with minor surface wear, light tarnish and the photo is a tad faded. The hinged cover is a tight fit so it stays securely closed.
