This incredibly rare Georgian "Pinchbeck" fob style pendant is set with a Jasperware porcelain plaque of Cupid that was made in England by Josiah Wedgwood around 1790. The beautiful portrait of Cupid, the mythological son of Venus, is framed in flower petals and exquisitely modelled in blue Jasperware with white and purple relief.
Superb quality the pendant is a dainty size and it is made out of Pinchbeck metal alloy that has been gilded in bright yellow high carat gold. Pinchbeck is an antique gold substitute invented in 1720 by London chemist and watchmaker Christopher Pinchbeck. Authentic Pinchbeck jewellery is much rarer than you might think, it fell out of favour in 1854 when 9ct gold was authorised in England and as a consequence real gold jewellery suddenly became affordable.
A beautifully feminine and romantic pendant, we imagine it would have been given as a love token. Steeped in English history this exquisite piece will make a unique and rare addition to your Georgian jewellery collection!

CONDITION: In very, very good antique condition, there is a tiny chip to the top edge of the porcelain plaque that doesn't affect the image, please refer to the photos. The Pinchbeck is still bright yellow with the high carat gold plating very much still intact. This cupid has been extremely well cared for over the past 200+ years!
