Wonderful very large Victorian swivel brooch featuring a George & the Dragon carved shell cameo on one side and hairwork behind glass on the other.
The hair is worked into elaborate curls and decorated with gold thread in a pattern known as the Prince of Wales feathers. The hair is set onto a foiled glass panel which gives it a lovely iridescent background.
Rendered in rolled gold the brooch swivels so it can be worn with either side facing to vary the look, nice and versatile as well as being very impressive!
The brooch is in lovely antique condition with minimal wear the the gold plating, the cameo is free of flaws and the hairwork is in beautiful condition. Hair jewellery is incredibly personal and was worn as sentimental love tokens or in remembrance so it features a lot in mourning jewellery.
The pin back is heavy duty and in perfect working order. The back of the hinge plate is visible from the front so it could be a later repair or just one of those charming little quirks you see in antique jewellery that has been fabricated by hand and not mass produced.
