A superb antique Victorian engraved sterling silver brooch showcasing a dramatic specimen sized Scottish agate stone, super quality and fine workmanship!

The glossy high domed oval agate is a dramatic copper colour liberally spattered in lines and flecks of dark brown. An attractive silver border engraved in a reed and pie crust pattern frames the agate and the back features a heavy duty pin back with a t-hinge and c-clasp. Adding to the charming decorative appeal the brooch is engraved on the reverse with the monogrammed initials of the original owner "JMP".

This striking and impressively large brooch was very fashionable in the 1870's at the height of the "Scottish Pebble" craze that occurred after Queen Victoria purchased Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She set a fashion trend for Scottish jewellery which became highly collectable and it still remains that way today!

MATERIALS: Sterling silver, acid tested

GEMSTONE: Scottish agate (chalcedony), Presidium tested
