Circa 1860, a superb high Victorian antique sterling silver brooch set with Scottish agates, citrines, amethysts and moonstone.
Hand wrought and beautiful quality the brooch follows a heraldic theme. 4 golden orange citrines (called Cairngorms in Scotland) accent the corners of the square brooch with slender rectangles of Scottish red and green agate set between.
The raised centre features a St Andrews Cross motif set in green agate and a Scottish crown motif set with a tiny pale purple amethyst, a lemon citrine and a crystal clear moonstone all set in tall bezels. The superb stones are framed with beautifully engraved borders.
A silver chain and safety pin adds to the decorative appeal and a long pin back with a c-clasp and t-hinge completes this beauty that is a fabulous example of authentic Victorian Scottish pebble jewellery.
The brooch is in excellent antique condition showing light wear and surface scratches in keeping with age and the pin back in perfect working order, please see the photos.
This is the perfect heirloom piece if you want to stand out from the crowd and she is bound to invite plenty of compliments! These genuinely old Scottish brooches are becoming harder and harder to find. They were the height of fashion when Queen Victoria purchased Balmoral Castle in Scotland, she set off a "Scottish Pebble" craze which meant the jewellery quickly became highly collectable and it still remains that way today!
