Grouse are game birds, their feet have long been considered good luck amulets and they been used in Scottish jewellery since the Georgian and Victorian times.
This vintage brooch/kilt pin is a fabulously decorative example of this type of unique jewellery. Crafted in sterling silver and fully hallmarked for Ward Brothers, Glasgow, 1948, the grouse foot is mounted in a sliver cuff with a glass amethyst set stag head and a wide band silver ring decorates the middle toe.
The brooch is in very good condition with light wear in keeping with age. There is a good covering of furry feathers and all four claws are undamaged. The reverse has a long pin back that is in good order and fastens securely. One of the prongs holding the glass stone is missing, the stone is cemented in so it is securely set.
A fabulous very vintage silver accent accessory good for the gents or the ladies, great for a Scottish themed wedding and a unique good luck gift, very collectable too! These brooches were very fashionable attire worn at game shooting parties held at Scottish country houses and estates during the early 20th century. They were worn on lapels, kilts and cloaks, Queen Alexandra was photographed wearing one on her hat at Balmoral Castle in Scotland and they were just as popular with the men.
