A fabulous vintage Celtic disc silver brooch that bears full Scottish hallmarks for for Edinburgh 1967 and is set with a genuine smoky quartz stone
This striking brooch is a round domed shape with a cross motif in the centre and features raised ancient Celtic symbols and zoomorphic birds against an acid blackened background. The beautifully faceted smoky quartz is a rich golden brown that flashes purple in bright light. It is mounted high in a decorative silver crown setting which, adds even more sparkle to the beautiful stone. The traditional name for these quartz stones that are found in the Scottish mountains is "Cairngorms" and they include amethysts and citrines. Cairngorms have long been considered to have magical and healing powers.
Along with the Edinburgh assay marks the brooch is also stamped with a makers mark 'JC' for the desirable Scottish silversmith James Coull and 'Made In Scotland' and it benefits from a sturdy pin back with a rollover safety clasp.
A fine example of a Celtic traditional dress brooch with plenty of age to it, a good makers and lovely to have the Scottish hallmarks too. Fabulous for wear on the lapel or hat, good for ladies or gents and highly collectible too!

GEMSTONE: smoky quartz (Presidium tested), 13mm diameter, transparent, good clarity with natural feathery inclusions
HALLMARKS: 'castle' for Edinburgh, 'thistle' for Scotland, date letter gothic 'M' for 1969, 'Made In Scotland' and makers mark 'JC'
MEASUREMENTS: 1-1/2 inches diameter (3.8cm)
WEIGHT: 14.4 grams.
ERA: Mid Century, 1960s.
