Not to be confused with French Jet, which is glass, this vintage sterling silver Celtic knotwork brooch is set with a cabochon of genuine Whitby Jet, a fossilized mineral gemstone millions of years old that is only found in and around the Whitby cliffs, a seaside hamlet in England.
Handcrafted in the Arts & Crafts style the brooch is beautifully domed and composed in a Gordian knot (one so entwined that it will never come apart) a classic Celtic design. Celtic knots are complete loops that have no start or finish, they symbolise how life and eternity are interconnected and they speak of love, loyalty and togetherness.
Super quality in thickly cast sterling silver this traditional Celtic brooch is steeped in ancient British culture and a great statement piece, good for the gents or the ladies!
If you have never enjoyed genuine Whitby jet jewellery before it is a lovely deep black and glossy organic gemstone that is lightweight and warm to the touch. If you tap it against your teeth it makes a dull tap as opposed to the sharp ring you get with glass. Our shop is based on the Yorkshire coast, in the heart of the Whitby jet industry and all our jet jewellery is locally sourced.

HALLMARKS: stamped '925' on the back, there is another hallmark stamped on the front which is obscured so we can't read it
CONDITION: in excellent vintage condition with no flaws, the brooch fastens with a rollover safety clasp that is in perfect working order. Dark areas seen in the photos are reflections.
