Dating to around 1830 these incredibly rare English Vauxhall glass flower earrings date to the Georgian Regency or possibly the very early Victorian era.
Very old ladies, that are steeped in history, the earrings feature flower motifs that are composed of tiles of faceted black Vauxhall glass. The glass is cut into navette shapes which form the petals while a round glass tile forms the centre of the flower heads. The tiles are stacked in 3 tiers and are cemented onto a brass back plate that is japanned in black lacquer.
The earring backs are sterling silver with shepherd hook ear wires soldered onto cup shaped plates. The backs are replacements, they would have originally had a hook that was simply soldered straight on to the brass back plate holding the flower heads.
This type of faceted black glass flower jewellery was the height of fashion in Britain during the early part of the 18th century. Not surprisingly, due to the fragile nature of glass, very little of it survives today, especially earring pairs.
The paste glass stones were manufactured at the Vauxhall Glassworks, a factory situated in the Lambeth area of London. The stones became popularly known as Vauxhall glass and it was a very expensive jewellery material at the time, only the rich could afford it. Its glowing luminescence was perfect for jewellery worn under candlelight and of course black jewellery was a necessity during periods of mourning.
A fabulous pair of Regency gems and rare survivors to boot, a unique addition to your antique jewellery collection!

CONDITION: given age these earrings are in very very good condition with expected surface wear and a few nibbles to the glass tiles under magnification but no missing tiles.
