A breloque was a decorative charm designed to adorn a gentleman's pocket watch chain, and this is a particularly lovely example. Beautifully engraved on both sides, it opens to reveal its original tiny oval picture rings complete with their original glass covers and cardboard liners, all of which appear never to have been used. We were the first to remove them for photography in well over a century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProbably French or Belgian in origin and crafted in an elegant scalloped lozenge-shaped form, the locket is engraved with different designs to each side, allowing it to be worn with either face showing. One side features a beautifully detailed spray of roses, while the other is decorated with clinging ivy surrounding a small vacant circular cartouche ready for a personalised engraved monogram. Steeped in Victorian symbolism, roses represented love and affection, while ivy symbolised fidelity and enduring attachment, giving the locket a wonderfully romantic sentiment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOriginally worn on a watch chain, the locket retains its original heavy duty jump ring.
