A wonderful antique Whitby jet stylised Ouroboros brooch hailing from the Victorian era.
The Ouroboros is an ancient circular symbol depicting a snake, or less commonly a dragon, swallowing its tail. As an emblem of wholeness or infinity it was a madly popular and sentimental jewelry motif to the Victorians who loved symbolism in all things!
This elegant gothic brooch is beautifully carved and polished to a glossy black shine. Dimensional and egg shaped it features tactile sinuous curves that are open to the back and an engraved diamond snakeskin pattern along the center. It is far from plain and somber even though these jet brooches were typically worn as mourning jewelry when black was very much in fashion due to Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert’s death.
