This locally handcrafted 1920s antique silver brooch is stamped in Egyptian hallmarks and is set with a blue faience scarab bead that looks to have considerable age to it. The scarab is bordered in a scalloped frame with rope trim and the background has been acid etched to give it a dark patina. Tutankhamun's sarcophagus stands at each side of the scarab. This is a delicate brooch steeped in naive folk art character, a unique piece!
Egyptian faience is a type of vitrified glazed pottery which has been used to make scarab amulets for thousands of years. To the ancient Egyptians the scarab beetle was a symbol of resurrection and scarab amulets were worn for good luck and protection.
Pieces like this brooch were created by Egyptian silversmiths in response to the "Tutmania" craze that exploded when British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered King Tutankhamun's tomb in 1923!
