A wonderful antique gold-cased very large Georgian pendant fob with a carnelian seal in the base that is engraved in the name of "Mary" in beautiful old fashioned handwritten script. Neoclassical in design the fob has reeded decoration and a wide chunky suspension loop at the top along with a bead accent. The glowing carnelian gemstone is a vibrant warm orange colour.
Gold-casing is an old technique sometimes seen in antique jewellery. A fairly substantial layer of solid gold was mechanically bonded to a strong base metal. The process reinforced the gold resulting in a durable piece that would withstand heavy use. It was especially useful in the Georgian period when softer high carat gold was favoured.
Despite her feminine engraving this is quite a large and impressive fob, she will look incredible paired with a substantial pocket watch or neck chain to match her character and is, of course, still usable as a wax seal.
