A fine example of a high quality Victorian long guard chain in solid 9 carat gold. Composed of oval cable links that are diamond cut and squared off, which adds extra sparkle and pizazz, this lovely versatile chain terminates in a classic Albert (dog) clip that swivels.
The chain is heavy duty and strong with solid thick links, the gold has the beautiful warm tone that you only see in antique yellow gold, almost a rose gold, but not quite. The chain feels weighty in the hand and as smooth as silk. It has enough heft and presence to wear with the largest of lockets or pendants and the clip has a particularly strong spring mechanism so anything you wish to add to the chain will stay safely attached.
You could add a pendant or not, wear it long, doubled or tripled, the chain has interest however worn and it has enough presence to be worn alone as a signature piece. Perfect for layering!
During the Georgian and Victorian eras these versatile chains were one of several jewels layered and worn at the same time, they were used to attach, and keep close at hand, all manner of things like pocket watches, spectacles, vinaigrettes, pencils and muffs.
