A gorgeous antique Victorian era brooch in the shape of an ornate crowned heart or 'Luckenbooth' that is set in glowing citrine and amethyst paste (glass) gemstones known locally in Scotland as "Cairngorms"
An oval facet cut orange paste citrine decorates the centre surrounded by a halo of round faceted citrine & amethyst pastes, the top of the heart is decorated in little purple paste amethyst cabochons. The silver setting is hand-engraved in feather motifs and zig-zag lines and a decorative silver safety chain and pin adds to the beautiful ornamentation.
Crowned heart jewellery represents loyalty to Scotland as well as a symbol love and affection, little wonder it has been a enduring love token throughout history. Popularly known as the Luckenbooth it is one of the most romantic Scottish symbols and takes its name from the locked wooden booths that sold jewellery and trinkets on Edinburgh's Royal Mile in the 17th century.
A beautiful example of this type of antique sweetheart jewellery, steeped in sentiment and good for the ladies or the gents.

GEMSTONE: paste (glass) citrines and amethysts, centre stone 13x10mm, round faceted stones 7.7mm diameter, round cabochon cut stones 3.3mm diameter
MEASUREMENTS: approx. 2" (5cm) tall, 1-1/2" (4cm) wide. Weighs 9.9 grams
DATE: Victorian, circa 1860
HALLMARKS: none, acid tests and verified sterling
CONDITION: in good antique condition with the reverse showing age and moderate wear to the silver like dings, tooling marks and a small tear which aren't visible when worn, please see the photos. The antique 'C' type tension clasp is in good order fastening securely. Slight scuffing to the paste stones under close magnification as you might expect in glass this age, the stones are secure in their settings.
