A magnificent and very large antique English silver and gold locket bearing full hallmarks for the year 1880. Hailing from the Victorian Aesthetic era the locket opens to reveal 2 photos of an attractive lady and gent in Edwardian dress which can be removed and replaced with your own if you wish.
Outstanding quality the locket is crafted in heavy gauge sterling silver, it features an elegant flat profile and hinged yoke with a very large triangular shaped bale. Exquisitely hand engraved in a stunning floral design it has an applied rose, calla lily and forget-me-not flower overlaid in rose gold and leaves in yellow gold. An enclosed banner contains the owners engraved monogram " FEO". Steeped in symbolism and romance perhaps this beautiful locket was a wedding gift to a lucky Victorian bride, roses speak of true love and the calla lily purity.
The locket opens from right to left and inside along with the photos are picture frames and clear plastic photo covers. This locket is in very good antique condition with light surface scratches and a couple of tiny pin-point dings as you might expect in an antique locket of this age, but nothing untoward. The interior is pristine, there is no looseness to the sturdy hinge and it closes tightly with a hard snap

HALLMARKS: stamped on the back 'lion passant' for sterling, 'anchor' for Birmingham, date letter 'f' for 1880 and makers mark 'G.W.D' for George William Dawson, a silversmith that was located in Hockley St. in Birmingham's historic jewellery quarter
