A superb antique Victorian sterling silver book shaped locket in a wonderful large size. Lockets this size were often worn on bookchain necklaces and it's rare to find one in this rectangular form, oval lockets being the norm. Made by George William Dawson, a silversmiths located in Birmingham historical jewellery quarter the locket is stamped with good clear hallmarks for the year 1879.
A quality piece crafted in heavy gauge silver the interior is gilded in bright yellow gold with the exterior gilded in a paler gold. The locket is exquisitely decorated in ornate detailing and it benefits from a large V-shaped bale ready to pair with a silver or gold chain that matches her stature and character. Note the chain shown is not included.
The locket opens to reveal 2 silver picture frames and plastic covers. There is plenty of room inside for larger photos or precious keepsakes. The reverse is engraved in the monogram of the original owner 'WNS' along with a later engraving 'to Clara Brown' in equally ornate script. This suggests that "WNS" passed the locket onto Clara, such sweet sentiment, perhaps Clara was her daughter, we will never know!

HALLMARKS: stamped on the inside front 'lion passant' for sterling, date letter 'e' for 1879 and makers mark 'G.W.D'. Stamped on the outside back 'lion passant', 'anchor' for Birmingham, date letter 'e' and 'GWD'. Stamped on the bale 'lion passant' Extensive hallmarking like this is always a sign of a quality piece.

CONDITION: in very, very good antique condition with light age appropriate wear and no noted flaws. Closes tightly with a satisfying click. Note any dark spots are reflections.
