A beautiful and highly collectible William VI sterling silver vinaigrette pendant made by John Bettridge and stamped with a full set of hallmarks for the year 1830. The marks which include the 'reigning sovereign's head' duty mark makes this little beauty quite rare because William only reigned for a short period - between 1830 and 1837 - before he died and his duty mark was replaced with that of his niece the new Queen, Victoria.

A quality piece by a highly regarded Birmingham silversmith who specialised in small boxes and vinaigrettes it is beautifully hand-crafted with chasing and engraving in charming patterns, a different one on each side. The hinged top opens to reveal a gold gilded interior and a hinged grille which is pierced in a rhombus design. Incredibly, the original sponge still nestles inside.

The vinaigrette has a bale and suspension ring at the top so that it could be attached to a watch or chatelaine chain and kept handy, a necessity of the era! During the 18th & early 19th centuries sanitation standards in Britain were so bad that the well-to-do were compelled to use vinaigrettes to ward off the prevailing noxious odours. The interior sponge was soaked in expensive scent and the vinaigrette wafted under the nose. Needless to say vinaigrettes were a fashionable indication of social ranking, only the elite in society were able to afford such luxuries, what better way to distinguish yourself from the lower classes!

Steeped in social culture this fabulous and rare vinaigrette pendant will look incredible paired with a substantial silver chain to match her character. A fine gift for the collector!
