A fine quality English sterling silver kidney shaped vesta case hallmarked in Chester in the year 1906. Chester Assay Office closed in 1964 resulting in these historical hallmarks becoming very sought after.
This is a particularly nice example of these charming match safes, elegantly proportioned, feminine and floral it is bound to be one made for the ladies. This vesta is hand-engraved in a beautiful and romantic ivy pattern (the clinging ivy speaks of eternal love in the Language of Flowers) and the interior is gilded in gold, a sign of quality piece. The front bears a shield shape cartouche inscribed in an ornate monogram

CONDITION: in excellent antique condition with the hinge in perfect working order ensuring the top snaps tightly closed. The engraving is still crisp and fresh and the striker on the bottom shows no signs it has ever been used.
