A superb antique Victorian engraved sterling silver plaid brooch showcasing a dramatic specimen sized Scottish carnelian agate stone, super quality and fine workmanship!
The glossy high domed oval agate is a dramatic copper colour liberally spattered in lines and flecks of dark brown. An attractive silver border engraved in a reed and pie crust pattern frames the agate and the back features a heavy duty pin back with a t-hinge and c-clasp. Adding to the charming decorative appeal the brooch is engraved on the reverse with the monogrammed initials of the original owner "JMP".
A fine collector's piece. Scottish pebble jewellery grew in popularity in the mid-1800s fuelled by Queen Victoria's love for Scotland and the jewellery made there. Brooches were especially favoured as they were both beautiful and functional holding heavy capes, cloaks and shawls in place. If you're looking for a statement sized piece of antique Scottish pebble jewellery then this may be the one for you.
