What an exciting find! This beautiful antique blue ring box will hold up to 6 rings and is printed "Hunt & Roskell - Late Storr & Mortimer - Jewellers & Goldsmiths to the Queen and Royal Family, 156 New Bond Street" inside the lid. Hunt & Roskell were a renowned London jewellers that held the Royal Warrant of Queen Victoria for many years and were founded by the celebrated and famed English silversmith Paul Storr.
The box is Victorian and dates from between 1843 to 1897. It is covered in royal blue velvet and features a domed lid imprinted in gold tooling. The box opens to reveal 5 cream velvet covered ring separators that are loose and can be moved to accommodate rings of different sizes and widths.
Retailers multiple ring boxes are uncommon, they might have used in their shop for display or more likely provided to a customer who had ordered several rings at once. This was usually the case with mourning rings which were often purchased in multiples at the bequest of the deceased and personalized with the addition of hair and or engraving.
The box measures 1-3/8"/3.5cm tall, the same deep and its 3-1/2"/9cm long. It is in very good antique condition with age appropriate wear, fading, staining and deterioration - but possibly not as much as expected in a velvet covered box of this age, please see the photos. It has a push button closure that works as it should. A rare box with tons of versatility, it's wonderful for display, staging or safe storage of precious antique rings and great as a photography or film prop!
