A beautiful antique Scottish brooch featuring sterling silver Celtic knotwork and a very large Cairngorm amethyst stone.
Early Victorian, circa 1840 the brooch is completely hand fabricated with lovely workmanship and lots of attention to the detailing. The filigree like silver scrollwork is fashioned into Celtic symbols framing the amethyst. A silver rope trim around the middle and the edge gives a finishing flourish.
The amethyst is natural and a beauty, oval faceted with an open back allowing lots of light to reflect through its violet and deep violet hues. A unique and very feminine antique Scottish brooch and, if you could bear to have it altered, the perfect candidate for conversion into an impressive Victorian pendant. The amethyst has long since been the jewel of choice for royalty and it is the birthstone for February.
MATERIALS: Sterling silver, tested
GEMSTONES: amethyst, Presidium tested, oval faceted 26x20mm by 11mm deep, roughly 30 carats
MEASUREMENTS: 2"wide by 1-1/2" high (approx. 50x38mm)
WEIGHT: 16.1 grams
DATE: Victorian circa, 1840
HALLMARKS: the back edge of the brooch is stamped with a line of marks that are indecipherable and 'RIRAI' is etched in the silver (likely a workshop mark)
CONDITION: In very good antique condition and the pin back in perfect working order. There is a very small hairline crack at the back of the stone that may have been done during manufacture because there is no damage elsewhere, it isn't particularly noticeable to the naked eye but can be seen in the magnified macro photos.
