A harmonious and dainty antique Victorian double strand coral necklace finished with a floral carved coral bead that conceals the fastening clasp. A popular necklace style in the 19th century jewellery made of coral sourced in the Mediterranean was often brought home as a memento of a visit to Italy.
The necklace is composed of 2 strands of tiny coral nugget beads, the top strand is 16" (40cm) and the lower strand is 20" (51cm). The red coral is natural and undyed, it is a beautiful salmon red/pink colour with a waxy lustre and scatterings of tiny mollusc holes and growth lines.
The necklace weighs 21.7 grams, it is in beautiful antique condition with no noted damage to the coral and the silk necklace cord shows no signs of deterioration. It fastens securely at the carved bead with a silver concealed barrel clasp.
This dainty antique coral necklace is a great way to connect you to 19th century fashion, it a lovely wearing length so it will always be visible with any neckline. The Victorians considered coral a symbol of modesty and it was thought to offer protection against the evil eye, which made this gemstone even more precious!
