Fully hallmarked for 1888 this charming little Victorian sweetheart brooch is fashioned as a lucky horseshoe and is made from sterling silver overlaid with 9ct rose and green gold accents.
Full of symbolism and sentiment the front is engraved in ivy vines and decorated with a rose gold forget-me-not flower and an oak leaf in green gold. This is a lovely Victorian Aesthetic pattern that speaks of love, ever-lasting affection and endurance. A row of silver beads decorates the bottom of the horseshoe and the brooch has an extra long pin back adds to the lovely antique appeal.
The brooch is in good antique condition with light surface wear, faint scratches and a couple of the beads are a bit squished, please see the photos. The back shows some age with general wear and tear and the c-clasp looks like a replacement. The pin back functions properly and fastens securely.
A sweeet sentimental accent accessory good for the gents or ladies and a classic good luck token, fabulous for the equestrian! Perhaps this lovely piece was worn by Victorian bride on her wedding day. Horseshoes have traditionally been worn or carried by the bride on her wedding day for generations. Not only did they bring luck to the marriage it was also hoped that they would bring forth fruitfulness because of their resemblance to the crescent moon.
