Circa 1950, this fabulous mid-century sterling silver modernist pendant is by the famed artist and silversmith Margot de Taxco.
Margot (Margot Van Voorhies Carr) was one of the early designers who worked in old Taxco, Mexico, she was the wife of Antonio Castillo who had worked with William Spratling before he and Margot opened a family run studio under the name of “Los Castillo.”
Fully signed and superb quality in heavy gauge sterling silver this elegant pendant is fashioned in a curvy Art Deco inspired ribbon and ball design. It has a large heavy duty right angled bail built-in to the back which will accommodate a wide variety of chains or silver necklace wires. This pendant also has an unobtrusive heavy duty pin back should you wish to wear it as a striking statement brooch (please note the chain shown is not included in the purchase).
This a large size pendant/brooch measuring 2-1/8" (5.5cm) tall. It is 1-3/8" (3.5cm) wide at the top widening to 1-7/8" (4.5cm) at the bottom and it stands 1" (2.5cm) high. It is heavy weighing 38 grams.
The back is fully stamped with 'Margot de Taxco', 'Eagle Mark 16', 'Sterling', 'Mexico' and the design number '5247'.
In excellent condition, damage free with a superb vintage patina to the silver. The pin back fastens with a rolling safety clasp which is in perfect order. A fabulously innovative modernist silver pendant. Margot de Taxco jewellery is very collectible, it represents one woman's pioneering creativity in a male dominated industry, as well as a dynamic moment in the history of Mexican silver.
