Circa 1800, this exquisite antique Georgian 15ct gold brooch features 7.50cts of natural flat-cut foil back garnets which were very fashionable during the era and are highly collectable today. The round juicy raspberry red garnets are set into pinched cupcake settings and the foiling adds a glowing luminosity that is just otherworldly.
These bold garnets encircle a glass fronted compartment containing braided light brown hair. The compartment is bordered in a gold repoussé frame which adds even more to the decorative appeal. Jewellery featuring hair-work is closely associated with mourning but it is also possible that this sentimental piece was worn as a token of love and affection.
The reverse of the brooch is fully enclosed in gold and it it has a long strong pin and C clasp.
