A Georgian Regency era gold cased locket brooch in a picture frame style with the locket compartment containing woven chestnut colored hair behind a thick glass panel.
Gold cased jewellery is similar to rolled gold/gold filled jewellery with a sleeve of real gold bonded onto a stronger base metal. It is much thicker than modern gold plating and will withstand lots of wear. The gold frame is beautifully embossed in a floral and foliate pattern and a sturdy pin back with a t-hinge and c-clasp completes this lovely feminine brooch that would have perfectly suited the lightweight floral silk gowns of the late Georgian era.
It is in lovely antique condition with minimum wear to the gold overlay and the hairwork still perfectly woven and no dust or debris behind the glass. Hair jewellery is incredibly personal and was worn as sentimental love tokens or in remembrance of a loved one lost so it features a lot in mourning jewellery.
