Dating to the mid-19th century this beautiful Victorian black Vauxhall glass bead necklace would have been worn during the mourning period as was customary at the time.
Opera length the necklace is subtle but far from plain boasting 7 large crisply faceted beads in 3 different fancy shapes which lift this strand out of the ordinary. The darkly glittering hand-cut beads are strung onto heavy gauge dark brown silk cord and hand knotted in between each bead.
At a continuous 31-1/2" (80cm) long the necklace slips over the head with ease. A beautiful all original antique necklace and an elegant way to connect yourself with Victorian fashion.

DATE: circa 1860, Victorian
CONDITION: in very, very good antique condition with the stringing showing no signs of deterioration. The beads aren't identical to each other as you would expect in antique beads that are made by hand and there are some tiny flea bites here and there seen on very close examination but nothing untoward.
