Exquisite, a beautiful statement sized antique Whitby jet brooch set with a superbly carved pink and white coral cameo of a beautiful neoclassical women. This is an early piece made with a dome shape jet frame and the pin back set into the jet, later Victorian brooches tend to have pin back-plates that are glued onto the jet.
The coral carving is superb, a master's hand at work. During the Victorian era experienced carvers from Naples in Italy were invited to Whitby to teach the local jet workers their cameo carving art! DATE: circa 1860, Mid-Victorian
WEIGHT: 27 grams
CONDITION: in very good antique condition with age appropriate surface wear and no damage to the jet at the front of the brooch, the back shows scratches, dings and a fine hairline crack in the jet. This is on the surface and doesn't go through to the front so it won't cause an issue.
