An adorable little Victorian sterling silver baby's brooch. Crafted as a symbolic oak leaf with simple detailing it is hand engraved with 'BABY' on the front. An oak leaf motif in jewellery design represents strength and prosperity.
Known as "handy pins" these little treasures were traditionally given to babies as a birth or christening gift and would have been used to fasten a bib, or simply worn as decoration on a hat or a coat. It goes without saying that antique baby pins like this pose a safety risk to infants and should be treasured as a sentimental keepsake or worn under strict supervision.
The brooch dates to around 1900, it measures 1-1/2" (3.8cm) long and 5/8" wide and it is in very good antique condition. It isn't marked so we have acid tested to verify it is sterling silver, it weighs 2.8 grams
At Mercy Madge we offer antique and vintage jewellery that is special and each piece is hand selected by us for you. We rarely come across two identical old treasures, once they are gone, they are truly gone!
