A beautiful antique carved Whitby jet pendant locket hailing from the Victorian era. Not to be confused with French Jet which is glass, Whitby Jet is a fossilized mineral gemstone millions of years old, it is found in and around the cliffs at Whitby, a seaside hamlet in England.
This large sized jet locket features a glass fronted compartment on one side to hold a photo or other treasured keepsake. The other side has a gentle pillowed profile and is carved in traditional diamond shaped facets. A versatile pendant locket, you can wear it with either side facing to vary the look.
The round jet bail at the top is a generous size and means it can be attached to a wide variety of different necklaces: carved jet chains or beads, ribbons, cords or pretty much any size/weight of silver chain. The chain shown in the photos is not included.
The glass photo compartment is accessed by gently flipping out the silver metal frame with your finger nail and there is a cardboard template and black satin liner inside.
A classic genuine Victorian Whitby jet photo locket, as wearable today as it was when it was made 150 years ago!
MEASUREMENTS: 2-1/2" (6.5cm) drop, locket measures 2" (5cm) tall, 1-1/2" (4cm) wide, 10mm deep. The photo compartment measures approx. 1-1/2"x1" (4x2.5cm)

CONDITION: in very good antique condition, the polished glossy black jet still retains a beautiful shine and is free from chips and cracks. There is slight chipping to the edges of the locket glass as you might expect given age. We have a longer video on our website at www.mercymadge.com
