A wonderful antique 18ct gold-cased Georgian pendant fob set with a carved carnelian horseshoe intaglio seal, the universal symbol of good luck.
This large and impressive pendant fob is heavily encased in luxurious bright yellow 18ct gold that is embossed in ornate floral motifs. It has a reeded arch at the top with a large suspension loop and a little gold bead.
The base of the fob is set with a beautiful rectangular cabochon of glowing orange Scottish carnelian engraved in a marvellous horseshoe motif which is as crisp and fresh as the day it was carved.
Gold casing is a popular technique used in the construction of antique jewelry. A thick layer of solid gold is mechanically bonded to a base metal (often silver) to reinforce strength. This process allowed for heavy embossing and engraving and resulted in a durable piece that would withstand heavy use. It was especially useful in the Georgian period when softer high carat gold was favoured.
A classic good luck token in a luxury setting, this Georgian pendant fob will look incredible paired with a substantial gold chain to match its stature and character!

CONDITION: in very, very good antique condition with expected signs of surface wear and light tarnish. The carnelian is free of any flaws and the horseshoe seal turns out a well defined impression. There is no wearing away of the heavy gold casing which is still beautifully bright and shiny, it looks like a solid gold fob.
