Dating to around 1820 this beautiful antique Georgian silver double curb link muff or guard chain terminates in a threaded swivel clasp that's consistent with the period. A double curb link chain is a tight chain where 2 links are laid on top of each other and joined by a 3rd. This method of construction results in an ornate woven and very strong chain which, out of necessity needed to be durable.
At 45 inches long the chain is designed to attach to a loop on a ladies’ muff so it can be worn at waist level. The 'dog-clip' style swivel clasp is quite different to later designs. The collar unscrews to reveal a hinged opening and it closes by inserting the little peg back into the slot and tightening the screw mechanism to lock it back into place. This is an early and secure type of clasp, probably preventing many misplaced muffs!
The chain is in very good antique condition consistent with a 200+ year age, there are 2 single links missing which is fairly typical in these antique double linked chains and it isn't really an issue, please refer to the photos. The clip is in perfect working order fastening securely. Tightly woven long chains like these can form occasional kinks when bunched up but a firm circular jiggle at both sides of the kink soon releases it.
A beautiful, elegantly proportioned Georgian silver chain, it has interest whether worn long or doubled, add a locket or a pendant or not! Please note the pendant shown is not included.
