This beautiful solid 15ct gold antique Sampson Mordan propelling pencil is a fine collector's piece, and an all round exquisite example of Victorian craftsmanship.
Sampson Mordan (1790-1843) was a British silversmith and a co-inventor of the first patented mechanical pencil. They were destined to become the most fashionable luxury accessory of the Victorian age!
Elegant and practical this is a super example of one of those pencils. Machine turned engraving in a quilted pattern covers every inch and the top is set with a white chalcedony seal which screws off to store the spare pencil leads that are inside. Perfectly engineered a slider pushes up and down to protract and retract the gold nozzle that unscrews to refill the pencil lead. There is a piece of size 0.90mm currently in there.
