Circa 1870, this super quality solid silver Victorian necklace chain has chunky fixed double links and a large detachable bolt ring clasp. It is a classic heavy duty "book chain" originally designed to be worn with the large oversized lockets that were very fashionable during the Victorian era.
Known as a Belcher (or Rolo) link chain the necklace has round O-shaped links, it measures 17-1/2" (44.5cm) in length with soldered end rings and it benefits from a good sized bolt ring clasp. Wonderfully tactile this chain has taken on a gorgeous antique patina over the past 150+ years, giving it a smooth almost snake-like feel as you move it around in your hand.
A classic of the period, it has enough presence to wear it alone as a signature piece, fab for layering and is ideal to attach your antique pendants and lockets. It is destined to become a go-to favourite however worn!
"Book chains" were an essential bit of kit in the late 19th century, these heavy duty silver chains became known as book chains because Victorian ladies had a habit of removing them to use as a bookmark whilst reading!
