An impressive and beautiful pair of all original Siam silver nielloware vintage earrings dating to the 1940's.
Lovely quality and very ornate the earrings feature drops that have pillowed centres with both sides adorned in silver dancing nude goddesses against black enamelled (niello) backgrounds. The images are surrounded by decorative bright cut silver cut out work in a foliage pattern. The drops suspend from round pillowed niello tops with screw fasteners at the back.
Nielloware is a traditional jewellery inlay technique hailing from Siam, now called Thailand. Steeped in culture and instantly recognisable, with these earlier pieces becoming very collectible, the jewellery features characters and divine deities from the Buddhist legend of Ramakien.
MATERIALS: sterling silver, niello inlay
DIMENSIONS: 1-3/4" (45mm) from top to bottom, the drops are 1-3/8" (35mm) long and 17mm wide at the base
MARKS: stamped 'sterling' on the screw backs
DATE: 1940s
WEIGHT: 7.6 grams combined
CONDITION: In excellent condition with no loss to the black niello (any spotting is camera reflection) and the screw backs in perfect working order
