This huge vintage zoomorphic Celtic penannular brooch pin is crafted out of silver plated pewter, it is beautiful quality and very strong.
The brooch has a very large heavy duty ring decorated at each terminal with 'Book of Kells' rams heads. Beautifully detailed the rams have curled horns and are depicted against a textured and shadowed grassy background with flower motifs in the corners. The rotating pin is extra long which adds even more to the decorative appeal. The pin is made from hardened carbon steel and is very thick so it will attach to the heaviest of fabrics with ease and without bending.
The Book of Kells is an illuminated gospel created by monks in Britain during the early middle ages, around 1200 years ago. Its pages are heavily illustrated in knotwork interlaced with animal (zoomorphic) figures such as rams. The ram was a sacred animal in Celtic religion and a powerful subject in their art and personal adornment. Strong and true, the ram was the leader and protector of the flock.
A fabulous and distinctive piece that can be worn by either sex to fasten plaids and tartans to the shoulder or worn as a statement brooch and would work perfectly to fasten a cloak or scarf. To fasten, the pin is pushed through loose weave fabric and secured by rotating the ring over it.
