A striking antique Chinese 900 silver auspicious character statement brooch circa 1900. Auspicious characters are ideographs for things like prosperity, good health, love, happiness and long life. In China jewellery decorated in auspicious characters is given to celebrate special occasions like graduations, weddings, anniversaries and child-birth.
Hand-engraved in beautiful bamboo detailing against a hammered background the brooch is a rather large size measuring 2"/5cm tall and 1-3/4"/4.5cm across at the widest point and it weighs 6.3 grams. It is stamped on the reverse in Chinese character makers marks and '90' for 900 silver (a common silver standard in China at the time and slightly lower than sterling which is 925). In excellent antique condition with minimal wear and the clasp fastening securely. Note any dark spots are reflections.
