A beautiful and substantially sized Victorian 9ct gold heart locket, cleverly incorporating the form of a padlock, although it was never intended to function as one.

The shield-shaped heart has a particularly elegant outline and is richly decorated with fine engraving worked over a delicate machine-turned linear ground. Each side carries a different design. One features scrolling flourishes surrounding a graceful floral spray, while the other is centred on a stylised keyhole, framed by flowers, foliage and further scrolling ornament.

The upper section is formed as the padlock hasp, creating a substantial bale with a generous 8mm jump ring making it especially easy to wear on a favourite gold chain.

The symbolism of the heart and padlock is especially evocative. Victorian jewellery often incorporated forms that conveyed romantic sentiments, and a heart secured by a lock naturally suggests love held close, devotion and the keeping of something precious safely within. Here, the symbolism is particularly fitting, as the heart opens from the side to reveal two compartments for photographs, making this not only a beautifully decorative piece but one with an intimate purpose.

Possibly once worn as a breloque, a decorative pendant or charm suspended from a watch chain, the locket closes securely and with its two-sided engraved decoration it gives you a choice of which side to wear facing.

This is an example of the distinctly British Victorian and Edwardian locket-making technique known as “9ct gold back and front”. The principal front and back panels were constructed in solid 9ct gold, while the less visible structural elements — in this case the rim and padlock-style hasp — were made from a more durable rolled-gold type of metal. This technique allowed jewellers to create finely detailed pieces with the richness and substantial appearance of gold, while providing additional strength where it was most needed.

The combination of its unusual heart-shaped padlock form, beautifully executed engraving and meaningful symbolism makes this a particularly charming example of Victorian jewellery. It is an intriguing piece with a lovely sense of sentiment, while its substantial proportions and practical bale make it surprisingly easy to wear today.
