Circa 1880, this impressive Victorian Scottish pebble brooch is beautifully crafted in sterling silver and set with four colourful elongated kidney-shaped natural Scottish agates, each showcasing the remarkable variety of Scotland's native agates. At the centre, a sparkling faceted paste Cairngorm glows with warm amber tones, faithfully capturing the appearance of the local amber coloured quartz so closely associated with Victorian Scottish jewellery.

The elaborate silver mount is particularly striking, incorporating dramatic bat-wing motifs that lend the brooch a subtle Gothic Revival character. Richly hand-engraved with finely detailed floral ornament and accented with polished beadwork, the quality of the craftsmanship is evident throughout. The crisp engraving remains beautifully preserved, allowing the intricate decoration to be fully appreciated.

Inspired by Queen Victoria's love of Scotland following her purchase of Balmoral Castle, Scottish pebble jewellery became highly fashionable during the second half of the nineteenth century. Local lapidaries transformed native agates into miniature works of art, creating jewellery that celebrated Scotland's rugged landscapes and natural beauty. This brooch is a wonderful example of that enduring tradition.

The reverse retains its original pin, T-hinge and C-clasp, all consistent with the period.

A distinctive and authentic Victorian Scottish brooch, its unusual Gothic Revival-inspired mount and beautifully preserved engraving set it apart from the more commonly encountered pebble jewellery of the period. Equally appealing to collectors and lovers of antique jewellery, it remains as striking today as when it was first crafted nearly 150 years ago.
