A superb and substantial Victorian guard chain necklace dating to circa 1880, crafted in solid fully hallmarked 9ct gold with the rich warm blush tone so characteristic of fine antique rose gold. At an impressive 152cm (60 inches) in length and weighing a luxurious 41.9 grams, this is an exceptional example of the classic Victorian guard chain, both highly wearable and increasingly sought after by collectors and lovers of antique jewellery alike.
Open ended in design, the necklace offers wonderful versatility and can be worn long, doubled, or even tripled for a layered look. The chain is composed of round belcher/rolo links interspersed with elongated double trombone links, each with a gentle twist that adds further decorative appeal and catches the light beautifully as the chain moves.
Despite its substantial gold weight, the necklace remains beautifully fluid and supple when worn, draping elegantly whether styled alone or paired with a favourite antique locket or pendant. The chain terminates with its original Victorian dog-clip clasp stamped ‘9ct’. The adjacent end ring carries a ‘crown 375’ hallmark for 9ct gold and the chain itself bears an additional ‘9ct’ stamp to a small plaque beside the ring, confirming the piece is solid gold throughout.
During the Georgian and Victorian eras, long guard chains were both fashionable and practical, used to suspend pocket watches, lorgnettes, vinaigrettes, lockets and other treasured personal accessories. Worn full length, they were often draped and tucked behind a belt with the decorative accessory hanging elegantly at hip height. Today these magnificent long antique chains remain effortlessly stylish and wonderfully versatile — equally suited to modern layering or traditional wear.
