A rare and highly characterful antique Victorian Scottish kilt pin, modelled as a stag’s fetlock and executed with exceptional realism. Pieces of this sculptural quality and scale are seldom encountered, particularly with integrated hardstone and seal elements.
The hoof is carved from richly coloured carnelian in a warm brick-red tone, its polished surface contrasting beautifully against the finely engraved sterling silver mount. The pommel is set with a substantial amethyst, cut as an intaglio seal and engraved with the initials “PP” — the original owner’s monogram. The seal remains crisp and fully functional, producing a clean, well-defined impression.
Of impressive size and weight, this example is crafted in heavy gauge silver and displays confident, high-relief modelling throughout. The naturalistic detailing to the fetlock is especially well rendered, capturing both movement and texture — a strong example of mid-Victorian workmanship within the Scottish tradition.

The reverse is fitted with a robust, heavy-duty pin mechanism, designed to securely fasten substantial fabrics including thick tartans and close-woven cloth. While traditionally worn to weight the front of a kilt, it translates effortlessly to modern wear — equally striking on a jacket, coat, or scarf.
Examples of this quality and presence are increasingly difficult to source, particularly with a fully functional intaglio of this scale.
